R.I.P. Aaliyah Dana Haughton "Truly One In A Million"
Today marks the 9 year anniversary of one of the greatest R&B singers to date. Aaliyah, was one of the most down to earth, beautiful, intelligent and soft spoken singers to entertain us with the gift of song. 9 years ago, August 25, 2001, Aaliyah died in the Bahamas, in a crucial plane crash that left millions devastated. Aaliyah had just finished filming her 2nd video for her self titled 3rd album. "Rock The Boat" was the last music video Aaliyah made. "Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number", "One In A Million", "Aaliyah", and "I Care For You" are top albums still selling throughout the world. The world may have lost an angel, but her spirit and music still lives on.
On Hearing The News Of Her Death:
I can recall the day I heard about the news that Aaliyah, had passed away. My family and I were on our way back to Jersey from Disney World(Florida). I can just remember my step sister and I were in the back of the car sleeping and waking up to the radio airways saying Aaliyah had died in a plane crash. At that time in the early millennium years, death rumors were heavily pushed around and other celebrity false nonsense. It had to take about 3 radio shows in and PSA(Public Service Announcement) to dawn on us that Aaliyah had died in a plane crash. My step-sister and I both teared and started crying. It was an emotional day, her music touched not just us but a lot of people in the world. May God Bless Aaliyah And Her Family.
Being Introduced To Aaliyah:
Aaliyah began her music career when she was little girl and singing professionally in 1991. I wasn't familiar with her first album "Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number" which was released in 1994. I was introduced to Aaliyah from a cousin of mine. My cousin Chameeka would play Aaliyah's sophomore album "One In A Million" a lot. The album came out in 1996 and I was 7 years old just singing all her top hits off the album such as "One In A Million", "4 Page Letter", "At Your Best", "Hot Like Fire", "If Your Girl Only Knew", and "The One I Gave My Heart To". I didn't know what I was singing about, I just knew this talented girl was just pouring her heart and soul onto this album. This is when I became an Aaliyah Fan.
Aaliyah:
Aaliyah means "The Highest Most Exalted One". Her name means just what she was inside and out. I didn't know her personally, but every appearance she made, interview she did, performance she killed surely made you feel like you grew up with her. Aaliyah's third album self-titled is one of my favorite albums ever. Aaliyah was at the peak of her fame and she had a lot of doors opening for her. Aaliyah had 5 hit singles from three movies; "Disney's Anastasia", "Dr.Dolittle" with "Are You That Somebody" and "Romeo Must Die" with "Try Again", "Back In One Piece" and "I Don't Wanna Be" which Aaliyah co-starred in "Romeo Must Die". Following up to her singles and newly movie career and relationship with Damon Dash , Aaliyah was back to work on a new album and movie "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Queen of the Damned". At this point in her life, I can remember MTV airing "MTV The Diary:Aaliyah" I remembered back then DVD players were out but I was so young to even own one, so I used to get a video tape cassette and just record every TV appearance she was on or special documentaries. Aaliyah was pretty much a household name in my home.
Memories:
Wow! Thinking back about all the Aaliyah memories I had is incredible. The memory I once will remember about Aaliyah, is when me and one of my close best friend's would always learn the choreography to her videos and do them as soon as they came on. Lol, I swear we would practice non stop as if we were actually filming the video. I couldn't get enough of trying to learn her choreography. The first dance I think we actually had down pack was "Are You That Somebody". What was actually cute is the fact that we had to use our PlayStation 2's to play our Aaliyah Video Discography DVD. That PlayStation 2 DVD format was crucial hell, especially using the joystick remote controller.
